PeepSo is taking a significant step forward by upgrading its widgets to WordPress blocks, aligning with the latest advancements in WordPress’s block editor. This upgrade is currently in the beta phase, allowing you to test and provide feedback on the new functionality.
It’s BETA!
We can’t stress enough that blocks are still in the BETA phase, and you should only use them for testing purposes, whether it is with your favorite page builder or with the built-in WordPress Gutenberg builder. At this point, only two widgets have been converted to blocks: Hashtags and Profile widgets. These initial conversions serve as a test bed to ensure the stability and usability of the new blocks before a broader rollout.
Feature Parity?
While the transition from widgets to blocks is a promising move towards enhancing customization and flexibility, you should be aware that feature parity between the old widgets and the new blocks is not equal. Some of the PeepSo widgets were built 11 years ago. Let that sink inโyes, eleven years ago. At that time, WordPress blocks were not even a concept on a drawing board, let alone a feature. That being said, some functionalities available in the traditional widgets may not be fully replicated in the blocks. However, we are only talking about a singular widget featureโthe ability to choose the background for the widget. This gap is expected as the development team works on refining the blocks to match and eventually surpass the capabilities of the original widgets.
We encourage you to experiment with the new blocks and share your experiences to help PeepSo perfect this transition, paving the way for a more integrated and intuitive social networking experience within the WordPress ecosystem.
What Happens With Widgets?
For the foreseeable future, nothing impactful will change. You will still be able to use traditional widgets for a long time because we are only starting this transition. Based on our experience developing these two blocks, it will take us several months to convert all available widgets to blocks. It’s not a simple process, so you’ll be able to use old widgets for at least several more months. Only after all widgets are converted to blocks will we deprecate the widgets, allowing you even more time to prepare and make a proper transition from widgets to blocks.
What Else Is New?
We are rolling out crucial updates to address conflicts with several third-party plugins. Key updates include resolving AWS conflicts to ensure smooth performance, eliminating an infinite loop issue with YOAST SEO for harmonious functionality, and fixing compatibility with the Print My Blog plugin.
